I have to admit that when I start to write a new creation, I don’t worry about length. If my brilliant idea turns out to be created in a few pages, then I’m happy.
With publishers wanting short stories, novellas or youth fiction, how do you know how much to write? The best place to go is the submission guidelines of any publisher’s website or any website looking for written material.
From what I have researched, the following book lengths is what you should be looking for:
Flash Fiction between 100 to 1,000 words
Short Story between 1,000 to 7,500 words
Novelette between 7,500 to 20,000 words
Novella between 20,000 to 50,000 words
Adult Novel between 50,000 or 80,000 words to 110,000 or 150,000 words (depending on the genre)
Youth Novel between 40,000 to 75,000 words
Don’t let the length of the manuscript deter you from writing. Remember when you were in school and your teacher asked you to write a 500 word passage and you said, “Ugh, 500 words!”. Well, we know now that it seems a lot but 500 words is practically half a page.
All the words may seem out of your league but if you concentrate on the creation of your work; with full plot, interesting characters, good dialogue, plenty of conflict and a good ending, the words will flow and fill up one of the categories above.
Now get to writing!
