Genres and Sub-Genres

You already know about the major players in literature; science fiction, romance, fantasy, mystery/crime, horror and contemporary fiction.  I am sure you also know about all the sub-genres but did you know just how much is out there?

I have compiled a list of sub-genres that you could possibly write your story in.  Some are going to overlap but this will give you an idea of the gamut of stories you can write about.

Basically, what can’t you write about?

Once you’ve put together your wonderful creation, take a look at the list and see just where your novel or short story can be categorized.

It was exhausting just to read them all but informative as well. It’s fun to know that whatever you decide to write, there will be a category for it.

Have fun with it and see how many categories your story can fit into.

Happy Writing

  1. Very useful list, congrats! I would add that you haven’t taken into consideration genres that are age-centric, like Young Adult or Boomer Lit, the former focused on 14-18 age group, the latter on 50+ age group…What is your take on this? Where do they fit compared to genres and sub-genres that are theme-related as those you have listed here. I’d be very interested in your opinion!

    • I never gave that into consideration. I figured with so many sub-genre’s and the fact that most people who read fall into that age category, one of the genres would cover it. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Also, the writer can use any one of the subgenres and write a story with that age category in mind. Thanks for your input. Have a great evening.
